The Davis School District has seen numerous budget cuts in recent years, and candidates running for Seat 1 have plans to make sure wise choices are made with the upcoming budget. Incumbent Barbara Smith, of Bountiful, has witnessed the cuts firsthand, but amid the budget woes has tried to modify the impact where possible."In the first couple years of cuts, we tried really hard not to impact classrooms and took the funds from auxiliary services, district office personnel and filled openings within the district. But by the third year, to be able to make the cuts, we finally had to impact classroom size," said Smith, who has served for five terms. "We have really tried to keep class numbers low in kindergarten through third grade, something I worked very hard (for) where the children learn to read."
