Pet deer attacks North Ogden fisherman

MORGAN — Test results on a mule deer that attacked a Weber River angler inside city limits Feb. 2 showed the aggressive deer was not diseased, a Utah Division of Wildlife Resources spokesman said.

Instead, this territorial deer was a pet with no fear of people, said Phil Douglass, DWR spokesman. The buck was born in 2006 and raised in captivity by a Morgan man who had witnessed its mother killed in a vehicle collision.

W. Virginia had most deer-car collisions; Utah low

WASHINGTON - Picture yourself behind the wheel on a dark and shadowy night, watching the windshield wipers bat away the rain and wondering, "What are the odds I’m going to hit a deer?"

The answer would be one in 102 if you live in Virginia. They are one in 114 if you live in Maryland. (If you live in the District of Columbia, the odds are higher that you will hit an opossum.)

Utah ranked near the bottom as a low risk state with the odds one in 405 of hitting a deer while driving.

Calif. deer population declines 50% in 20 years

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- An estimated 445,000 deer live in California, or about equal to the city of Sacramento's human population. Which sounds like a lot, until you realize the deer are spread over the entire state: 99 million acres.

If there were only 445,000 people in California, how long would it take you to find somebody you really wanted to hang out with?

Such is the plight of the state's deer population, our most iconic emblem of the forest. Without much notice, the species has declined slowly but relentlessly in virtually every corner of the state.

The decline has been almost too small to see on an annual basis. But since 1990, California has lost half its deer population, according to the state Department of Fish and Game.
