Emergency preparedness fair set in Farmington

FARMINGTON — A tri-city emergency preparedness fair is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 21 at Farmington Junior High School, at 150 S. 200 West. The event is a combined effort of the cities of Farmington, Fruit Heights and Kaysville.

Speaker: Utah on better quake footing than Ore.

OGDEN -- Utah is famous as earthquake country, with the Wasatch Mountains serving as an obvious natural marker for the fault line that built them hundreds of millions of years ago.

The earthquake potential of western Oregon was a much better-kept secret until the past decade or two, said Scott F. Burns, a geology professor at Portland State University.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY: It's best to be prepared, say experts at fair

HARRISVILLE -- If you're like many Utahns, you've probably started a personal food and water storage program, but are you really prepared if a disaster strikes? It could take days for emergency personnel to arrive with helpful supplies in the event of a disaster. That's why it's important to prepare yourself as much as possible for such an event, said Deloris Stinson, owner and manager of Survival Solutions in Layton.

Stinson, speaking at an emergency preparedness fair Saturday in Harrisville, said while many people think to store food, water and even a first aid kit, they don't consider other things, such as a portable toilet, cash, important documents and clothing.

Disaster survivors urged to beware of recovery scams

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Small Business Administration is urging disaster victims seeking federal aid to be alert to scam artists posing as federal officials and to be cautious about any solicitations for fees to perform services that are available from federal agency staff for free.

In the wake of widespread flooding, wildfires and tornados in many areas across the country over the past few months, the SBA is particularly concerned about flyers that have appeared in tornado-damaged areas asking for non-refundable fees of up to $450 to help disaster victims fill out their loan applications and as much as $1,000 to verify losses and file loan applications.

Weber County officials say rain unlikely to fuel flooding

OGDEN -- Wet weather should not add to the area's flooding problems.

Weber County Emergency Management Director Lance Peterson said the scattered rain showers are not enough to add significantly more water to the overflowing rivers and reservoirs.

"Right now, there is nothing really to say other than we're doing OK, knock on wood," Peterson said Wednesday.

Davis residents get ready, get set for disaster

FRUIT HEIGHTS -- With intermittent snow flurries Saturday, the weather wasn't ideal for an emergency-preparedness fair, but natural disasters don't always come at convenient times.

After being sprayed down and scrubbed in a decontamination tent Wednesday, accident “victim” Jeri Frost is transported to the emergency room at Ogden Regional Medical Center. The procedure was part of a multi-agency, mass casualty drill.

OGDEN -- Jeri Frost was shivering, she couldn't walk and she was having trouble breathing.

Emergency prep fair planned in South Weber

SOUTH WEBER — An Emergency Prep Fair, where residents will be making 72-hour food kits, is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 28 at the Family Activity Center, 1181 E. Lester Drive.

Power to the people: Poll finds Americans wary of nuclear energy

WASHINGTON -- Most Americans doubt the U.S. government is prepared to respond to a nuclear emergency like the one in Japan, a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows. But it also shows few Americans believe such an emergency would occur.

Nevertheless, the disaster has turned more Americans against new nuclear power plants. The poll found that 60 percent of Americans oppose building more nuclear power plants. That's up from 48 percent who opposed it in an AP-Stanford University Poll in November 2009.

The Associated Press-GfK poll comes as Japan continues to struggle with a nuclear crisis caused by a March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant has leaked radiation into the environment and radioactive water gushed into the Pacific Ocean. Japan was rattled by a strong aftershock and tsunami warning Thursday, but officials reported no immediate sign of new problems.

Disaster planning is Weber 9/12 topic

Weber County 9/12 Project guest speaker Tim Woolf will discuss practical ways to prepare yourself and your family for when disaster strikes. The meeting is 7 p.m. tonight at Christian Heritage School, 5120 S. 1050 West.

Woolf will lead a discussion on what items are essential to have in a natural or economic disaster including water, food, heat and electricity, and emphasize proper storage.
