Disney tales loaded with life lessons

Editor’s note: We learn new things in the most unexpected of ways and places, as one TX. writer has discovered. Here’s the next in her occasional series of knowledge she’s stumbled upon.

Some Things I Learned From Walt Disney

• You are never too old or too smart for a little magic.

• Heroes come in all shapes and sizes.

• Making others smile is a good way to make them like you.

• Accept rejection, but never let it stop you.

• A smile is always a universal symbol of friendship.

Disney and Dali, 'GCB' explained

Q: A few years ago on a cruise, I saw a film short done maybe in the 1940s or early 1950s as a collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali. It was animated. The name of it is "Destino." At the time, information said it would soon be released for sale. I would love to have it but, so far, I know it has been delayed and I don't see it for sale anywhere. Do you know if and when it will be for sale? I would also like to know who sang the song that is this short film's soundtrack.

FARMINGTON — In the ancient city of Agrabah, Princess Jasmine’s father, the Sultan, tells Jasmine she must choose a husband.

The stage at Eagle Bay Elementary has been transformed into that ancient city, where 70 students in the school’s drama club performed the Disney musical “Aladdin, Jr.” against a backdrop of the Royal Palace in the desert.

Scenery was constructed and painted by students, teachers and parents, said Trish Packer, one of the co-directors of the production and a resource teacher.

Area residents are welcome to try to spot stars, as long as they don't impede filming, the producer says. (NICK SHORT/Standard-Examiner)

Hank Williams Jr. slams ESPN, Disney

LOS ANGELES -- Hank Williams Jr. is gone from ESPN and "Monday Night Football." But he is not going quietly.

The country singer of ESPN's "Monday Night Football" theme song who parted ways with the sports network last week after making comments on "Fox & Friends" comparing President Barack Obama to Hitler made his first appearance since leaving the network on Tuesday's edition of ABC's "The View," showing much of the outrageous and rambling personality that was on display during the Fox News Channel program.

Wearing a New York Yankees/Mickey Mantle jersey and orange-colored sunglasses, Williams took several shots at Disney-owned ESPN, saying at one point, "Mickey is a mean mouse." Though he insisted he was misunderstood and was using an analogy between Hitler and Obama to make a political point, he declined to apologize or take back his earlier statements.

Head of Disney Channels resigns

LOS ANGELES -- In the second top-management shake-up this month at Walt Disney Co., the executive in charge of the entertainment giant's powerful Disney Channel is leaving the company after less than two years on the job.
