Pit bull ransacks stranger's S. Ogden house, forces euthanization of cat

SOUTH OGDEN — Police are unsure who owns a pit bull that ran into a house Saturday and mauled a cat so badly it had to be euthanized.

Cat owners say their 13-year-old tabby Milo lost its teeth and several back claws, then bled severely throughout the room where it was attacked around 12:30 p.m., before he could be separated from the dog.

A veterinarian could not save the cat, and Milo had to be euthanized.

Dog-bite bill passes committee review

SALT LAKE CITY — A bill setting ground rules for personal injuries caused by dog bites has cleared a House committee.

The House Human Services Committee gave a favorable recommendation late Wednesday to HB 381, which creates provisions to arbitrate cases involving a dog bite. The bill imposes an arbitration award limit of $50,000.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Lavar Christensen, R-Draper, and now moves to the House for further consideration.

Changes in Ogden ordinance may curb bites, reduce stray dog numbers

OGDEN -- City officials hope proposed changes in the animal ordinance will curb dog bites without targeting specific breeds.

The city council is considering amendments to the animal control ordinance that would change registration requirements for what the city determines to be a dangerous dog, establishes additional insurance requirements for dogs that are unaltered -- meaning not spayed or neutered -- and increases fees for dangerous dogs and unaltered dogs and cats.

Layton dog owner cited with misdemeanor

LAYTON -- The owner of two dogs that are alleged to have bitten a neighbor and attacked her 8-year-old Pekingese has been cited with a class C misdemeanor in 2nd District Court in Layton.

Dog pack kills New Mexico man

GALLUP, N.M. -- Authorities in New Mexico say dog bites caused the death of a 55-year-old man who was found unconscious surrounded by a pack of canines.
