Davis district students involved in extracurriculars may face random drug testing

FARMINGTON — High school athletes, cheerleaders, drill team members and student body officers may have to consent to random drug testing when the new school year begins in August.

Davis School District officials began looking at a random-drug-testing proposal after parents, coaches and administrators said they were concerned about possible drug use among those who participate in extracurricular activities, said John Robison, the district’s health lifestyle director.

Drill teams shine, raise funds for cause

There was plenty of energy at the UCCU Center on Friday and Saturday as the top drill teams from across Utah competed in the UHSAA drill team championships.

Bountiful won another 4-A title, while Uintah repeated as 3-A champion. Copper Hills (5-A), Manti (2-A) and Dushesne (1-A) also claimed titles.

Bountiful rules 4-A drill championships; Copper Hills claims 5-A

OREM — The Bountiful High drill team kept its dominant streak going Friday, claiming its fourth straight state 4-A championship during spirited competition at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center.

The Mandonelles, who have won 19 of the last 20 state 4-A titles, won military, taking second in the dance and kick portion of the competition.

With region in the bag, drill teams prep for state

Is this the year for the Syracuse High drill team to finish atop the state 5-A championship standings?

How about Bonneville? Can its drill team beat the challenges of defending 4-A champion Bountiful and Region 5 rival Mountain Crest and reign supreme?

Morgan drill team takes first place at nationals after tough year

MORGAN -- After a tough year marked by the arrest of their drill instructor, the Morgan High School Troyettes bounced back to win a first-place award at a national competition.

Prep sports: Mountain Crest swims to strong showing

PROVO -- Skyline swam away with the state 4-A swimming titles on Saturday, outpointing the rest of field in impressive fashion at BYU's pool.

After the two-day event, the Skyline girls tallied 458.5 points, followed by Woods Cross 9235) and Olympus (211).

Mountain Crest was fourth, followed by Logan and Sky View, with Box Elder 13th.

Ogden High Tigerettes use hard work to get back on top

OGDEN -- To say Ogden High School's drill team, the Tigerettes, rose from worst to first in a mere two years is a vast understatement.

Utah drill team state titles up for grabs

The best drill teams in regions 1, 5, 6, 11 and 17 will take aim at state championship titles this weekend at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center.

The 5-A and 4-A championships will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. Saturday, the 3-A, 2-A and 1-A teams take to the floor from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Defending 4-A champion Bountiful will face strong challenges from 2011 runner-up Bonneville, as well as Mountain Crest, Box Elder, Sky View and Logan from Region 5, as well as Clearfield out of Region 6.

Bountiful drill team to perform for Jazz

BOUNTIFUL -- The Mandonelles, Bountiful High School's award-winning drill team, will perform Monday at EnergySolutions Arena during halftime of the Utah Jazz-versus-Portland Trail Blazers game.

Prep notes: Royal softball standouts will sign together

Four Roy High softball players, with their seniors season yet ahead of them, will sign letters of intent to play junior college athletics on Wednesday at a signing party at the RHS conference room.

The signing will occur at 7:30 p.m., and friends, fans and family are invited.

"We thought it would be fun to all sign together," Roy catcher Caylie Phelts said.

Prep notes: 24 drill teamers honored

The Utah High School Activities Association issued an all-state drill team during its competition last month.

Local honorees included:

2-A: Kylie Bott (North Summit), Tanna Tholen (North Summit).

Braves top 4-A, Lakers 2nd at drill competition

OREM -- The Bountiful High School Mandonelles proved that they deserve a little r-e-s-p-e-c-t, sweeping all three state 4-A drill team events to take home the overall championship for the third year in a row.

The Bonneville Lakettes were the bridesmaids, placing third in military, second in dance, and second in kick.
