Driving

(MATTHEW ARDEN HATFIELD/Standard-Examiner) A Smart Start ignition interrupt device, or IID, is seen in a customer’s car Thursday. The device allows the vehicle to start only after the operator blows into it and the system verifies that no alcohol is in the operator’s system.

The drive to stop DUIs a technological fight

OGDEN — In 1995, the son-in-law of Goodyear TAS Tire & Auto owner John Savage was killed by a drunken driver, so for the last six years, Savage has helped reduce the risk of that happening to other families by installing more than 500 Smart Start units in the vehicles of people convicted of driving while intoxicated.

Car safety: It's OK to let Grandma drive the kids

LOS ANGELES -- One less reason to worry about letting Grandma drive the kids: Letting her take the wheel might lower the chances that your kids will get injured.

Detroit 7-year-old’s 20-mile joyride a jaw-dropper

DETROIT — Barefoot and wearing pajamas, the boy was too small to even see over the steering wheel of the car. But that didn’t stop him. The 7-year-old boy from rural Sheridan Township in Mecosta County, Mich., near Big Rapids, reportedly stood up on the floorboard of his stepfather’s red Pontiac Sunfire, gripping the wheel with his hands and accelerating with one foot on the gas pedal.

The boy’s jaw-dropping 20-mile ride, which ended when police got him to stop by boxing him in near the bridge over the Pigeon River outside Caseville, Mich., was all motivated by one thing, according to police.

Police say that as his mother slept, the boy drove his stepfather's red Pontiac Sunfire more than 20 miles from Sheridan Township by himself to try to get there, hitting speeds of 50 mph with police in pursuit.

REALITY CHECK: Driving comes with its own set of responsibilities

For 16 years the main focus of all our existence is based upon one seemingly magical number in which a teenager believes the world will instantly become simpler -- no longer having to rely on others for rides and finally having a taste of freedom.

With seat belts buckled and car keys in hand, the awaited age of 16 and getting a driver's license is the focus of all teenagers alike. But this glamorized coming of age, although exciting, has more to the story than simply being allowed a license.

A salute to keeping legislators, 'Zits' and safe driving in the light

The short, raucous life of HB477 came to a quiet end Wednesday when Gov. Gary Herbert signed legislation that repealed the controversial bill that would have revised and restricted Utah's open records act, or GRAMA.

Cell phone driving laws having little impact

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- Is legislation truly effective when it comes to regulating or banning cell phone usage by car drivers?

Edmunds' AutoObserver.com explores the complex and confusing answer in "Cell Phone States of Mind."

Right now 13 states have laws banning drivers' use of cell phone handsets. Eight of those states as well as 22 other states have restricted any cell phone use for novice drivers only. That leaves 15 states where there are no restrictions at all on a driver's cell phone usage.

Nearly 20 percent of drivers use Web behind the wheel

LOS ANGELES -- Forget texting and driving or talking on the phone and driving: Those extremely dangerous habits are old hat. The new worry, says a survey released by State Farm this week, is what the insurance company cleverly calls "webbing while driving."

That means looking up Web pages, following driving directions, reading and composing e-mails, checking Facebook and twiddling with smart-phone apps -- activities that require sustained concentration and multiple key presses.

Lawmaker: Go easier on teen DUIs

SALT LAKE CITY -- A local lawmaker wants to give teenagers who are arrested for driving under the influence a chance to regain their driver's license.

Utah's law, which has been in effect since July 2009, means a minor who has any measurable amount of alcohol in his or her system will lose their license for 120 days or until they're 21 years old, whichever is longer.
