Chief nearing retirement killed in N.H. drug bust

GREENLAND, N.H. — A man opened fire on police during a drug bust Thursday night, killing a New Hampshire police chief just days from retirement and injuring four officers from other departments. Early Friday, the shooter remained holed up in the home with a woman, police said.

The shooting devastated Greenland, a town of 3,500 near the seacoast that had just seven police officers including Chief Michael Maloney, 48, who was due to retire in less than two weeks.

“In those final days, he sacrificed his life in public service as a law enforcement officer in New Hampshire,” Attorney General Michael Delaney said early Friday.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Mexican troops have made a historic seizure of 15 tons of pure methamphetamine in the western state of Jalisco, an amount equivalent to half of all meth seizures worldwide in 2009.

Layton pair busted with drugs, forged documents

FARMINGTON — Two Layton residents are facing multiple felony charges after Davis Metro Narcotics Strike Force officials say they found illegal drugs and numerous fake identification cards in the couple’s home.

Danielle Rae Kennington, 27, and Alec Jason Thomas, 32, appeared Friday in 2nd District Court.

Kennington is charged with three first-degree felony counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute; 10 third-degree felony counts of forgery; and one class A misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Local law enforcement agencies saw a disturbing trend in 2011 of out-of-state crews coming into the area to sell illegal drugs, everything from marijuana and methamphetamine to illegal prescriptions, cocaine and heroin.

"This is just following a national trend that has hit here," said Lt. Darin Parke with the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force.

Prison guard charged with selling heroin at Layton mall

LAYTON -- A prison guard is in jail after being arrested on suspicion of dealing heroin.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Former NBA player Jose Ortiz was arrested in Puerto Rico after federal agents seized 218 marijuana plants at his house along with 40 rounds of assault-rifle ammunition, the U.S. Attorney's office said Thursday.

He is accused of possession with intent to distribute marijuana plants and faces a minimum of five years in prison if found guilty, U.S. Attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez said.

"This should send a message," she said.

The 47-year-old Ortiz, among the best basketball players the island has produced, appeared in court Thursday and agreed to enter a drug rehabilitation program. He will remain at the undisclosed institution until his next hearing July 26.
