TREMONTON -- Representing Citizens for Families, Matt Zollinger and John Gunther asked the Tremonton City Council to adopt a citywide standard opposing pornography within the community.
Gunther told the council 44 other communities in Utah have issued a proclamation setting a city standard for their communities. He offered to help the city write a proclamation.
Zollinger said the only way to fight pornography is to bring the subject out in the open.
"Pornography is the new drug," Gunther said. "It is the worst drug you will ever find."
Zollinger added, "Pornography is as addictive as any drug out there. I am opposed to it and I will fight it any way I can."
There is a light at the end of the tunnel, though, he said. Addiction to pornography can be conquered with a 12-step program similar to the programs for drug and alcohol addiction.
Zollinger, a counselor at Bear River Middle School, said the school has had a Red Ribbon Week to talk about the dangers of drug abuse.
This year, it is going to have a white ribbon week to discuss Internet safety. A component of that will be anti-pornography.
Parents are welcome to come to the school to see what will be taught.
"Someday, we want our kids to say, 'I want to stay away from pornography and this is why,' " Zollinger said.
The city council will write a proclamation, which will be adopted at a later date.
