Kaysville Eagle Scout work on the rise

KAYSVILLE -- The city received more service from Eagle Scouts in 2011 than it has in over five years.

Boy Scouts working on their Eagle projects completed 21 service projects for the city, including, planting trees, laying sod, pouring concrete, staining pavilions, and removing noxious weeds.

Every year we create a list of park projects that we do annually and offer some of them as Eagle Scout projects and last year we offered 25, said Cole Stephens, parks director.

In 2012 the city will offer 27 Eagle projects on a first come first served basis.

HARRISVILLE — William Eatchel wants the folks at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home to have something fun to do this summer, so he started collecting fishing poles.

The 17-year-old Weber High School graduate said because he was already working on obtaining his Eagle Scout award, he decided to approach the veterans home to ask if they needed any help.

“They said the people there would really like to go fishing but they needed the equipment,” he said. “I thought I would get around 20 poles plus some equipment like fishing lines and tackle boxes. Fishing is good therapy and I think it would be good for the people there.”

The heart pillows made by Braden Bell and the Weber-Morgan chapter of the Down Syndrome Foundation were adorned with a card to their future owners. The pillows were distributed to local hospitals to be given to heart patients recovering from surgery.

Eagle project a comfort to heart patients

OGDEN -- Recovering from heart surgery can be very painful. Just moving, breathing and coughing can aggravate an already sore chest.

Holding a small pillow against the chest can ease the discomfort patients experience after this major surgery. Knowing this, Braden Bell wanted to help.

The 13-year-old South Ogden Junior High School student and member of Boy Scout Troop 466 decided to help make 60 pillows for heart patients at Ogden Regional Medical Center and McKay-Dee Hospital. Not only does he feel good about his project, but he earned his Eagle Scout rank as well.

Braden heard about the project through the Weber-Morgan chapter of the Down Syndrome Foundation, which has made pillows for cardiac patients. Braden gave the foundation a call and asked if he could earn his Eagle by helping out.
