The American Red Cross has issued a news release explaining how people can safely make donations to help with disaster relief in Japan.
Those who want to help can go to www.utahredcross.org and donate to Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami.
People also can make a $10 donation by texting REDCROSS to 90999. With the exception of Red Cross costs for operations along the U.S. West Coast and Hawaii related to the tsunami and an average of 9 percent charged for administrative costs, all the money raised by the American Red Cross will go to the Japan earthquake and tsunami response.
The Red Cross also encourages Utahns to be prepared in the event of a disaster here. For highly detailed information about disaster preparedness, visit www.utahredcross.org.
In a separate news release, Smith's Food and Drug Stores are offering customers a convenient way to help the American Red Cross in its international relief response to the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific.
Through March 26, customers may make a donation of any amount to the American Red Cross by simply adding that amount to their checkout purchase. All funds collected will directly benefit American Red Cross international relief efforts in partnership with the Japanese Red Cross, the agency responding with help of food, water, shelter, medical supplies and other assistance.
