Scouts' honor: Exhibit centered around Girl Scout centennial

The Eccles Community Art Center is the perfect place to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Girl Scouts, because it's where the organization was introduced in this state.

"That's where the first troop meeting was held," said Lucy Smith, director of program for the Girl Scouts of Utah.

The Utah group was started in 1920 by Bertha Eccles and Lilliebell Falck.

Ogden artists step up to challenge and create Girl Scout-inspired art

When members of the Palette Club of Ogden were challenged to make Girl Scout-inspired art for the centennial of that scouting organization, Mary Wells happily stepped up to the plate ... of cookies.

Wells created a small book, folded accordion-style, called "Girl Scout Cookies on Parade."

Each of the Girl Scouts' famous cookies is painted on its own page, and the cookies received the royal treatment with their names carefully written in calligraphy.

Tagalongs are the South Ogden artist's favorite Girl Scout cookies -- not necessarily for painting, but for eating.

Drum players get a bang out of raising cash for Africans in need

OGDEN -- Encouraged by its success in raising money to provide a well for a village in Ghana, a local group now wants to start an orphanage in Liberia.

Kathy Gambles said she loves the way she feels after spending a couple of hours playing African drums. She and a group of friends drummed once a month through last winter and spring at the Eccles Community Art Center and raised enough money to build a well.

New exhibits rolling into art galleries

Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll is on April 1, but galleries aren’t pulling April Fools’ Day pranks — they’re offering serious exhibits.

The stroll starts at 6 p.m., and continues until 9 p.m., in downtown Ogden. The stroll is an opportunity to see new exhibits after galleries’ usual hours. Many shops hosts receptions and the chance to meet the artists.

Most of the participating galleries are along Historic 25th Street, from Wall Avenue to Jefferson Avenue, making it possible to walk from shop to shop. There are a few more are on surrounding streets. Admission is free.
