SALT LAKE CITY -- The chairman of the Utah Senate's budget committee says the state's budget outlook is getting worse.
Republican Sen. Lyle Hillyard and other lawmakers got an idea Tuesday of what deep cuts to the state budget could mean for various agencies.
It's possible Utah state government could lose nearly 1,000 jobs in the coming year, school class sizes could grow, medical clinics could close and services to the poor and disabled could be stretched thinner.
To avoid cuts to public education, lawmakers would have to find $293 million to replace cuts scheduled to take effect in July, the start of the next fiscal year.
Lawmakers are facing a possible budget shortfall of $850 million when their session starts in January.
