BOUNTIFUL -- The city council has approved development of an 8,200-square-foot professional office building on property originally targeted for a different retail project.
In recent action, the council voted 5-0 to approve the preliminary and final site plans for the Integrated Wellness Professional Office Building at approximately 470 North and 500 West.
The two-story building will feature 5,600 square feet on the main level and 2,600 square feet on the second level.
The site plan is part of the Silvercreek Commercial Development that was approved almost 11 1/2 years ago. Original plans for the site called for construction of an Astro Burger and also a new Parts Plus Store.
It is adjacent to a parcel of land where the state will begin construction of a liquor store this fall.
The development is located in a 3.3-acre parcel once occupied by the Bontvilla Trailer Park, a Parts Plus store, a motel and two residential lots.
Plans for the area changed when the state decided it needed more space for the liquor store. Parts Plus then moved across the street. That move took a squeezed parking plan for the area and opened it up, said Aric Jensen, director of Planning and Economic Development.
Not everyone is thrilled by how development plans for the area have progressed.
"It's disappointing to keep losing out on commercial projects," Councilman Fred Moss said of the new office complex.
Some city officials had hoped to see a new restaurant on the former trailer park site.
"It's ironic we can't get a restaurant but we can get a huge liquor store," Mayor Joe Johnson said of the development.
Construction of the new office space comes even as numbers for office space availability in Davis County are at near-record highs.
