LAYTON -- Top of Utah bus service cuts will begin next week.
To save approximately $300,000, Utah Transit Authority will eliminate service on six bus routes in Weber, Davis and Box Elder counties -- all set to take place Sunday.
Under the proposal, UTA will eliminate all Saturday service on bus Route 455, which connects downtown Ogden and the Weber State University campus with downtown Salt Lake City and University of Utah.
The route currently runs hourly from 8:45 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Saturdays.
Saturday service will also be eliminated on Route 613, which currently runs hourly from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., connecting the Ogden Transit Center Station to Weber Industrial Park.
In Davis County, Saturday service on routes 626 and 627 will be discontinued.
The routes currently run from 7:20 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Saturdays, connecting 5600 South and 3500 West in Roy to the WSU Davis campus in Layton and Davis Applied Technology College in Kaysville.
Sunday service will be discontinued on Route 667, the Lagoon shuttle from the Farmington FrontRunner Station.
Currently, Sunday Lagoon shuttle service runs every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April to October. The route connects to the park from the Farmington FrontRunner Station.
To keep Sunday service to the amusement park alive, UTA will modify its bus Route 470 so it will travel around the west side of Lagoon, near the park's entrance.
The modified 470 route will run every 60 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and will remain under its normal configuration Monday through Saturday.
In Box Elder County, Route 685 will be canceled altogether.
UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter said the worldwide recession continues to have an impact on the agency's budget, requiring a close examination of the efficiency of the agency and its services.
The cuts will affect about 200 UTA bus riders, representing less than 0.5 percent of UTA's total customer base in the Northern Utah region.
UTA has another round of service changes scheduled in August, but the Top of Utah will likely be unaffected.
