OGDEN -- It was one hot time Friday at Weber State University. The university kicked off the school year with its annual block party to inform and entertain incoming students.
The theme was "One Hot Time," and students were able to heat up their day with hot-sauce testing or watching a fire-safety demonstration that lit mock dorm rooms ablaze.
They also could cool down by riding blocks of ice down campus or slurping a slushie.
"It's fun," said Katherine Wilson, a freshman majoring in nursing who attended the party. "There's a lot of free stuff."
Booths dotted the campus to provide students with information about clubs, organizations and how to get involved on campus for the new school year.
"It's an opportunity to check out what the university has to offer," said Nikki Nicholas, chairwoman of the Wildcat Block Party. "They can do it in a relaxed environment, which is different from meeting in the office."
Getting purple pancakes from the administration for breakfast or ice cream from the Purple Pak Association is a stress-free way for students to gather information they may want, but may not know how to access.
"You can have fun out here and have a good time," Nicholas said. "It shows you what you can do (on campus) in a more relaxed environment. It's educational, but also has a very fun element."
Freshman Sheridean Pancheri said she learned a lot about organizations during Friday's outdoor party that she wouldn't have known about if she hadn't attended.
"We learned when the hockey game was, and the different clubs we could join."
