Bill would boost Utah sales taxes to aid education

SALT LAKE CITY -- State Sen. Stuart Adams has drafted a bill for the 2011 Utah Legislature that would boost sales taxes to pay for education and require school districts to cut property taxes.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the legislation is intended to spread education funds more evenly among Utahs 41 school districts and 80 public charter schools.

The Legislatures Revenue and Taxation Interim Committee, which Adams co-chairs, discussed the proposal Wednesday. But Adams, who said he is still tweaking the measure, asked the committee not to take action yet.

Adams, a Layton Republican, proposed boosting the state sales tax by 1 percent to generate $533 million, reinstating the full sales tax on food to raise $150 million, or a combination of both.

School districts would get a share based on their enrollment and growth rates.
