Bill changes teachers union opt-out

SALT LAKE CITY -- Teachers who join a union will not have to wait to opt out until the end of a school year.

Senate Bill 206, sponsored by Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, was approved Wednesday by the House, 55-16, and now goes to the governor.

Currently, teachers who join a local teachers union at the beginning of the year cannot opt out of the union until the end of the school year.

Stephenson's bill now allows teachers to opt out anytime during the school year.
