UT students raise money for Japan with origami

PROVO, Utah  — Utah Valley University's Japan Club and International Student Council want to raise funds for humanitarian relief efforts in Japan.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports that club and council members plan to fold thousands of origami paper cranes as a gesture of hope for the safety of victims following a devastating earthquake and tsunami that left thousands dead or missing in Japan.

The "A Dollar for Help, A Crane for Hope" fundraiser continues through Friday.

Cranes can be purchased for $1 each. The students plan to string the cranes together to make a "Senbazuru." According to Japanese legends, stringing 1,000 cranes together will make a person's wishes come true.

All collected donations will be given to the American Red Cross for relief supplies.

Similar fundraisers are occurring across the U.S.
