SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's Board of Regents has approved tuition increases averaging 7.5 percent for the state's nine public colleges and universities.
A base increase of 5 percent was approved Friday for every institution. There will be additional increases for nearly every school.
Dixie State College students will see the highest jump for the 2011-12 school year.
Their 11.8 percent increase will raise tuition almost $350, to just under $3,300.
Salt Lake Community College students will pay $120 more for classes. That's 5 percent.
School administrators say the increases are needed because the Legislature cut the higher education budget for the third year.
Commissioner of Higher Education William Sederburg says in a statement the increases could have been higher.
