Republican Bell leads Weber commission race

OGDEN — Republican Matthew Bell took a strong early lead over Democratic challenger Corey Combe for a vacant seat on the Weber County Commission.

At 9:15 p.m., with mail-in and early votes counted, Bell had 16,649 votes and Combe had 10,442.

Bell, a lieutenant with the Weber County Sheriff’s office, is a longtime chariman of the county’s Republican Party.

GOP sweeps top ticket races in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney easily won Utah in Tuesday’s general election, while Gov. Gary Herbert secured a win and U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch defeated his Democratic challenger to serve a seventh term in office.

Petroff takes early lead in commission race

FARMINGTON — Incumbent Davis County Commissioner John Petroff Jr. jumped to an early lead over Democratic challenger Steven J. Andersen.

At 9 p.m., with mail-in and early votes counted, Petroff had 8,831 votes to Andersen’s 3,454.

The county’s finances have been a key point in the race, with Petroff pointing with pride to the budgets that have been enacted during his first four-year term.

Weber School Board: Clarke, Favero compete for open seat

OGDEN — Layne Clarke and Richard “Rick” Favero will face each other for the open Seat 4 for Weber School District Board.

Favero has five married children who all attended schools in Weber School District and 13 grandchildren who now attend Weber schools.

Clark has four children currently attending district schools, so both candidates feel they have a vested interest in the district for that reason.

State School Board: Communication, funding on candidates' agendas

Education funding and more communication with legislators are among the top priorities of the two candidates running for the state school board’s District 1 seat.

Incumbent Tami Pyfer said, if re-elected, she will continue to enhance and improve the board’s communication with legislators, local charter schools and school districts.

Her opponent, D. Alan Shakespear, said he will fight for more funding from the legislature.

Ogden School Board: Teacher seeks to replace Belnap

OGDEN — The Ogden School District 1 race pits an experienced school board member and board president, Don Belnap, against an experienced Weber School District teacher, David Tanner.

Incumbent Belnap, 53, is a financial planner. He and his wife are the parents of seven children. He earned a bachelor of science degree at Weber State University, and has completed additional studies and certificates related to his financial planning career. Belnap is in his second four-year term on the Ogden School Board.

Ogden School Board: Handy calls for change in race with Story

OGDEN — In the Ogden School District 5 race, board member Shane Story is running on his record while his opponent, J. Scott Handy, is calling for change.

Handy, 62, a former Ogden School District teacher, is a marketer at Superior Roofing Inc. He is the married father of four, three surviving. Handy earned his Weber State bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in political science. He also earned his secondary teaching certificate at WSU.

House District 29: Bitton puts autism on priority list in challenging Perry

OGDEN — Democrat Heidi Bitton faces Republican Lee Perry in the new Utah House of Representatives District 29.

The 46-year-old Perry is technically the incumbent in the race, having served a two-year term in House District 2, representing the Perry area, before redistricting.

Bitton, 39, is a political newcomer. She graduated from Weber High School and is currently staying home to care for her five children.

Dixon Pitcher

House District 10: Pitcher, Winn say their backgrounds are key

OGDEN — A two-term Republican legislator and a Democrat who is a teacher are facing off for the seat in House District 10.

The two are incumbent Dixon Pitcher, 59, and Christopher Winn, 45.

Pitcher was elected to one term in 1984 and again two years ago.

Winn said he is canvassing the area, spreading hope of improving education.
