LAYTON — Vae View Elementary School — known as "the round school" because of its circular design, with the gym at the center and classrooms around the circumference — is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Uncle of boy who brought gun to school facing intense scrutiny

BREMERTON, Wash. -- Patrick Cochran said he was simply trying to do right by his family and fulfill his dying mother's request when he took in his brother's three children.

But over the past two weeks -- since a handgun his 9-year-old nephew brought to his Bremerton elementary school discharged and seriously injured a classmate -- he's been subjected to scrutiny he never could have imagined.

Girl fight ends in death of 10-year-old

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Cecilia Villanueva sat helplessly in the backseat and watched her 10-year-old daughter turn blue as her husband raced them to the hospital in a panic.

Earlier, the fifth-grader, Joanna Ramos, had come home from school vomiting and complaining of a headache after a fight with another girl.

Before she passed out on the family couch, she told her mother an 11-year-old girl had punched her in the head.

Boy, 9, charged in school shooting, has had tumultuous life

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- The pale 9-year-old walked into the Kitsap County Juvenile Court on Thursday, looking dazed in his orange jumpsuit. There was a television camera in one corner; reporters filled nearly half the seats.

Police say that on Wednesday, he took a loaded gun to a Bremerton elementary school, and that it went off in his backpack just before the final bell rang. The routine of third grade -- school, homework, play -- had changed in a split second.

Third-grader in critical condition after school shooting

BREMERTON, Wash. -- A third-grade student was in critical condition at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center after being shot in the abdomen Wednesday at a Bremerton elementary school.
