Library audit finds $40k skimmed from accounts

SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake County's auditor says an internal audit of the Whitmore Library has uncovered losses from a cash account totaling more than $40,000.

County Auditor Greg Hawkins says the money disappeared from the petty cash-type account over a period of about seven years beginning in April 2003.

A 2009 audit identified some $40,000 in inappropriate account withdrawals. Hawkins says about $10,000 remains unaccounted for.

Hawkins says a one-time library employee may be responsible. He says withdrawals ceased in April 2010 when the employee retired.

The audit's findings were turned over to the Salt Lake County district attorney's office for investigation on Wednesday.

Hawkins declined to identify the employee to The Associated Press.
