John Rich, award-winner director of landmark sitcoms, dies at 86

LOS ANGELES — As a top television comedy director who won an Emmy directing “The Dick Van Dyke Show” in the early 1960s, John Rich was faced with a tough choice in 1970.

On the same day he received a phone call from Mary Tyler Moore wanting to set up a meeting to discuss his directing the initial episode of her new TV series, he got a call from Norman Lear who wanted to send him a script for a pilot he was about to produce.

Emmycast with Jane Lynch presiding was a winner

Even if your favorite nominee got snubbed, Sunday's Emmycast could have been the most satisfying in memory.

It was funny, bright and skillfully hosted by "Glee" star Jane Lynch.

It moved at a brisk clip, free of the usual stumbles and lulls, and, even better, it flowed almost seamlessly, a next-to-impossible feat for any awards show.

'Modern Family' 'Mad Men' win big at Emmys

LOS ANGELES -- The Emmys keep buying what "Mad Men" is selling. The 1960s Madison Avenue saga won its fourth consecutive best drama series award Sunday, while big-hearted romp "Modern Family" claimed its second best comedy trophy.
