Energy-saving bulbs to light Temple Square

SALT LAKE CITY -- Many of the lights illuminating Salt Lake City's Temple Square this holiday season will be energy-efficient bulbs.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says that within three to five years, all of the square's trees will be lit by LED bulbs, which are more efficient than incandescent bulbs. The LEDs are also cooler, which protects the trees from heat damage.

The 70-foot cedar near the square's east gate will be the first tree to be lit by LED bulbs.

The holiday lights will be switched on Friday at dusk. The light display ends on New Year's Eve.
