Muamba remains critical after cardiac arrest

LONDON -- Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba remained in critical condition Sunday after going into cardiac arrest and collapsing during an FA Cup match at Tottenham.

The 23-year-old player's heart only "started working again" at a London hospital Saturday night, Bolton said in a statement Sunday.

The former England under-21 player fell face down near midfield during Saturday's match and medics rushed out to begin resuscitating him.

Dempsey has best season by an American in Europe

Clint Dempsey jumped high in the air, both arms raised, as a fan in the stands at Fulham unfurled a Lone Star flag.

On this January afternoon in London, Dempsey had become the first American to score a hat trick in the history of the English Premier League. The eyes of English soccer were on the 28-year-old from Nacogdoches.

Manchester United's Ferguson says he wants to stay for 2-3 years

LONDON -- Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says he wants to carry on as manager of the English champions for another two to three years.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, to be broadcast later on Monday, the 70-year-old said he would like an ambassadorial role with the club after he retires.

Real Madrid, Barcelona top football's rich list

LONDON -- Real Madrid and Barcelona are football's biggest moneymakers for the third straight year and look set to out-earn their rivals for the foreseeable future.

The annual review of football finance by Deloitte shows Madrid topping the list for the seventh straight year with revenue of 479.5 million ($636.5 million) to the year ending June 30, an increase of 9 percent on the previous 12 months.

English champion Manchester United was again in third place with (euro) 367 million ($487.2 million), the highest of four English clubs in the top 10 earners. Bayern Munich was fourth with (euro) 321.4 million ($426.6 million), with Arsenal, Chelsea, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Liverpool and Schalke next.

Column: Capello gives England excuse to fail again

Their colonial history notwithstanding, the English often like to think of themselves as being good at doing the right thing.

In deciding that John Terry should no longer captain the national team while accused of a racially aggravated crime, the English Football Association did the right thing.

Fabio Capello was either incapable or unwilling to accept that, and so said "ciao!" to his $9 million-a-year job as England coach. In doing so, the Italian demonstrated how little he learned about the English psyche in four years in charge of the Three Lions.

No crowing from Donovan after win against Dempsey

LIVERPOOL, England -- There was no crowing from Landon Donovan after he led his Everton side to victory over Clint Dempsey's Fulham in England's FA Cup.

After all, the U.S. teammates will be on the same side again soon enough.

England looks to U.S. sport to add glitz to FA Cup

LONDON -- Seeking to restore the allure of the FA Cup, English football is looking to American sport to see how some glitz can be added to the final of world football's oldest domestic cup competition.

Once the main event in the English football calendar and a must-see TV event globally, some of the cup's appeal has been lost as the more lucrative Premier League and Champions League appear to be outshining the 140-year competition.

Wembley Stadium has staged NFL regular season games for five years, giving a glimpse of how the FA Cup final could be spiced up with more entertainment and glamor there.

EPL gets 1st U.S. live network telecast

NEW YORK -- Without much fanfare, soccer will take another big step into the American mainstream this weekend when Manchester United's game at Arsenal becomes the first English Premier League match to be televised live by a U.S. over-the-air network.

"To do this 10 years ago, had we put to the affiliates that we wanted to take the time to show a soccer game, we would have been either laughed at or it would have been a violent and an immediate rebellion,"' said Fox Sports Chairman David Hill, who is putting the match on his main network.

Euros or Olympics? English soccer players pick

LONDON -- David Beckham could be among the players with a choice to make after England's Football Association said players picked for the 2012 European Championship will not be selected for the London Olympic team.

Beckham played a prominent role in London's successful bid for the 2012 Summer Games and has repeatedly said he wants to play for Britain at the Olympics.

Champions dropouts shocking

The biggest soccer buzz around the world this past week was in anticipation of Saturday's El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid, which lost 3-1. Coming in a very close second was the shocking news that not one but both teams from Manchester had crashed out of the Champions League before the knockout round.

Hard to believe, but the Champions League will go on without Manchester United and Manchester City. (Take a moment to digest that information.)

English soccer is premier in U.S.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- It's just past 8 on a sparkling morning, and John Laslett is sitting in a corner booth of a darkened English pub in Santa Monica, sipping tea and watching soccer on a small television hung from the ceiling.

"I love to get up Sunday morning and do this," he says. "This is kind of a ritual."

It's not just any soccer that will draw the UCLA history professor emeritus out of bed. It has to be the English Premier League -- and not just because the British expat is homesick.

Dempsey becomes leading American scorer in EPL

LONDON -- Clint Dempsey became the American career scoring in the English Premier League, capitalizing on a mistake by goalkeeper Pepe Reina to lead Fulham over Liverpool 1-0 Monday night.

With 37 goals since joining Fulham in 2006, the 28-year-old midfielder from Nacogdoches, Texas, broke a tie with Brian McBride, who played in the Premier League with Everton (2003) and Fulham (2004-08).

Beckham: 'Big decision' to make on future

MANILA, Philippines -- David Beckham said he has a "big decision to make" after his contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy expires and reiterated his desire to play for the British team at the 2012 London Olympics.

The former England captain arrived in Manila on Thursday with his Galaxy teammates for the second leg of a series of exhibitions.

"I'm very proud of the time that I've spent with the Galaxy and it might continue," said Beckham, whose contract expires at the end of the tour. "I think at the end of the day I have a big decision to make, but I obviously haven't made one yet."

Premier League spends 72 million pounds on agents

LONDON -- England's 20 Premier League clubs paid almost 72 million pounds ($113 million) to players' agents over a one-year period, with Manchester City spending 13 percent of the total.

The league said Wednesday that City paid 9.7 million pounds ($15.3 million) to agents from Oct. 1, 2010, to Sept. 30, 2011, a period that covers two transfer windows. City's total is close to three times the average spent per team -- 3.6 million pounds ($5.7 million).

Column: Blame Blatter? Blame soccer, too

"Resign!" howled Sepp Blatter's critics in England after the FIFA boss spouted ill-timed and offensive views on racism in soccer.

Easy. Too easy.

It's the sort of thing many people would agree with. But simply saying something is unpleasant doesn't make it go away.

That takes action. And, in that regard, soccer has failed. Miserably.
