FARMINGTON -- A family-friendly roller coaster to be built on the north end of Lagoon should add to the amusement park's already distinct skyline.
But because no official announcement has been made by Lagoon officials, most of the details involving the coming attraction remain a mystery.
The yet-to-be-named coaster attraction is scheduled to be built in time for the 2011 season, said Dick Andrew, Lagoon vice president of marketing.
Andrew also said the full design of the ride and the total cost were not available.
The ride will be built north of the Lagoon-A-Beach water park, in a space once filled with picnic terraces.
The roller coaster will be designed in such a way that parents may ride it with their children, Andrew said. "We hope it will basically accommodate the whole family," he said.
However, like other park attractions the ride will include some restrictions for younger riders.
The ride will be along the same genre as the "Bat" roller coaster, Andrew said, in trying to give some semblance of size.
"It isn't a Wicked kind of thing," he said referring to the park's newest high-thrill roller coaster attraction.
Work has already begun to clear space for the new attraction, with some of the footings for the ride already put in place, Andrew said.
"It is very obvious something is going on there," he said.
But at this time, Andrew said, he does not believe there are any signs at the construction site indicating a new ride is coming.
Any time the park adds a new ride, particularly a roller coaster, it is exciting and fun, Andrew said.
Lagoon did not add a new ride for the 2010 season, but has added some speciality shows for the summer.
However, in prior years the park has regularly added a new ride at the beginning of each season. The park in 2009 added Jumping Dragon and in 2008 the OdySea. Other recent ride attractions include Wicked in 2007.
Lagoon is now open on weekends and will open daily to the public beginning June 5.
