Entrepreneurs

(MATTHEW ARDEN HATFIELD/Standard-Examiner) Former Olympian Picabo Street skis with Zander Froerer (left) and Scott Coleman skis with Oakley Coleman at Snowbasin ski resort. The skiers are using a product called Hookease, invented by Coleman, which connect the instructor’s ski poles to the learner’s skis to teach the young skiers the proper skiing technique.

Hookease products help students of the slopes

A simple personal need led a local entrepreneur to create a company to help facilitate outdoor playtime between parents and their children.

It all started on the slopes.

When it came time to teach his toddler how to ski, Scott Coleman thought, "There has to be an easier way."

Save time, your sanity by outsourcing some tasks

At times, you are just better off outsourcing. Sometimes you come across a task, such as building a website, which utterly defeats you, no matter how hard you try. You end up wasting hours of effort trying to get it to work, but no matter what you attempt, that banner image just won't move a few pixels to the left.

Business excellence requires a hearty helping of sacrifice

Every business builder I know has made sacrifices to start and grow their business. It’s a key characteristic of successful entrepreneurs. By definition, a sacrifice is the act of surrendering something highly valued for the sake of something of even greater importance.

The concept of relinquishing a prized object for a highly desirable reward is as old as time. In today’s business environment, owners find themselves in situations in which sacrifices are made with varying consequences.

Speaking with entrepreneurs, we learn they often miss their wedding anniversaries and their children’s ball games, dance recitals, birthday parties, parent-teacher conferences. Why? They are often traveling on these important occasions, conducting business on behalf of their company. As I look back on my experiences, there were nights when I came home from work after the children were in bed and I was too tired to even enjoy a bowl of soup for dinner. My wife, Jeanne, was generally home alone raising the children while I was trying to close a business deal.

Know the challenges, risks before launching a business

Even with a great product idea that has gained traction with customers, founders face daunting challenges.

Successful entrepreneurs have taken significant personal risks to start and grow their businesses. Before moving forward, they should have evaluated each major risk and recognized the potential consequences of their decisions.

Every great business starts with a dream

All award-winning entrepreneurs have had a dream and followed it, turning their ideas into a commercial success.

There has never been a better time to follow your dream and turn it into a reality. Having a dream is the key, the starting point. Do you have that new product in mind? Are you ready to go? Then I say, full speed ahead. Go for it now!

Sadly, I have seen scores of individuals who have had a terrific idea but, for whatever reason, they were unable to follow the dream to start and grow a new enterprise. Whatever the reason, they never left the couch and the dream died.

Learn, live key characteristics of a successful entrepreneur

I am often asked these questions by aspiring entrepreneurs: What do I need to do to be successful? Where can I receive help? What resources are there? Who can guide me? How do I find money? Do I need a business plan?

Many entities can provide growth link for economy

Over the next year, I intend to write weekly articles on an economic action plan for the Ogden area. Columns will include information on what's being done, why, by whom, when, how, where and at what cost.

My hope is to share with you on a real-time basis the actions that are being taken to aggressively grow our local economy.

Entrepreneur grows algae to replace fossil fuel

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. -- It was the exhaust fumes from a diesel truck that inspired Dean Tsoupeis. He was stopped at a red light, directly behind a big diesel truck. As noxious exhaust fumes wafted through the vents of his broken air conditioner, he thought, "There's got to be a better way than this."

Today Tsoupeis, 40, a graduate of Northeast High School in St. Petersburg, Fla., credits that unpleasant experience, along with his admiration for the cooking-oil fueled Veggie Van, with providing the inspiration to grow algae as a way to help liberate the world from its dependence on fossil fuel and head off a worldwide food shortage.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert recognizing entrepreneurs

SALT LAKE CITY -- While applauding Utah entrepreneurs for their contributions to the state's economy, Gov. Gary Herbert urged business owners to continue making the investments in research and employees that will lead to further growth.

Entrepreneurs bring Ikea products to buyers

ST. LOUIS -- One Saturday each month, Emily and Mark Schmitz make a road trip to Ikea.

The south St. Louis County couple usually hit the road around 3 a.m. Once they get to the Bolingbrook, Ill., store, they split up to be more efficient. The Schmitzes end up spending about eight hours at the store, including two hours loading up their truck and trailer.

"We'll check out with anywhere from 14 to 18 carts," Emily Schmitz said. "They'll often open a special line for us."

But the furnishings don't end up in their living room. In the following days, they divvy up items to customers who pay the couple to make the Ikea run.
