OGDEN -- Weber County has begun laying the groundwork for the North Legacy Parkway. The Weber County Commission on Tuesday night approved an amendment to the West Central Weber County General Plan Transportation Element that has the parkway running from 5100 West in Hooper to 6300 West before bending toward Plain City at about 2000 North.
The location is only a general description, said Weber County Planning Director Rob Scott.
There is no legal description of the location because the goal is more to identify a general corridor location for the parkway, he said.
Passing the amendment gives the county the ability to acquire land for the corridor and lets property owners know what future plans for the county are, Scott said.
Only one person spoke in opposition to the location.
Kattie Nipko, whose property borders the proposed route, said she would prefer the parkway to go west of 6700 West.
She said the proposed route would ruin a canal that runs from Bear River Bay and would disturb deer migration routes.
"Don't ruin our little community," she said.
Road construction is still 30 to 50 years away, Scott said, so there is plenty of time to consider tweaking the route.
Discussions about the North Legacy Parkway began in 2001, but a steering committee was created in 2007 to identify possible routes.
The Western Weber Township Planning Commission took a trip to see the property and look at the options earlier this year. Members held a public hearing in July and voted to recommend approval of the amendment the Weber County Commission passed.
Ben Wuthrich, Wasatch Front Regional Council transportation engineer, said he is grateful for the work the planning commission put into identifying the best corridor.
"The theory behind corridor preservation, we all think it's a good idea -- but it's hard, as we're talking about peoples' homes and livelihood."
