Utah abortion data bill clears Senate despite race issue

SALT LAKE CITY — A bill requiring that federal abortion data on the race and ethnicity of women having abortions be available to a state agency has cleared the Senate after generating some sparks in floor debate a day earlier.

The Senate voted Wednesday to approve SB 60, sponsored by Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem, to require the Utah Department of Health to prepare an annual report on abortions in the Beehive State.

The data is generated from a federal form on which the provider asks questions of the patient. The form also allows participants to state the reason they chose the procedure.

Davis schools help parents bridge ethnic achievement gap

LAYTON — Bridging the gap between the lower test scores of minority students and the scores of their counterparts was the goal of the Davis School District’s Parent Equity Night at Northridge High School.

The difference in scores creates what district officials call an achievement gap.

Minority students comprise approximately 7 percent of the district’s student population, said Suzanne Cottrell, representing the district’s Assessment, Research and Evaluation Department.

In today's world, ethnic minorities, when added together, are slowly transforming from a small group into a future majority. Diversity scholarships for teenagers, like those from the Somos Foundation or Luisa Mallari Fellowship, are being created especially for minority students who work hard in their academic, athletic or musical fields.
