LAYTON — Six homes had to be evacuated Thursday morning, after crews installing fiber-optic cables for high-speed internet clipped a two-inch natural gas line.

RENO, Nev. -- Firefighters worked to hold the line Friday on a fast-moving brush fire that tore through the Reno area, destroyed 26 houses and forced thousands of residents to flee. The forecast of rain and snow would help douse the flames but also increase the chance of flooding on the charred land, authorities said.

The blaze started shortly after noon Thursday and, fueled by wind gusts reaching 82 mph, mushroomed to more than 6 square miles before firefighters stopped its surge toward Reno.

MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. — About 125 people were evacuated overnight from the visitors center at Mount Rainier National Park as authorities searched the snowy terrain for an armed gunman suspected of killing a park ranger.

OGDEN — The Weber Center, 2380 Washington Blvd. Ogden, was evacuated today at 10 a.m.

CENTERVILLE -- Two homes were voluntarily evacuated after a natural gas line broke Friday evening.

A work crew was drilling near 200 North and 300 East when part of their machine broke the gas line about 6 p.m., said Officer Rolynn Snow of Centerville Police.

The two homes directly in front of the leak were voluntarily evacuated.

Questar showed up and had the leak fixed in about an hour, Snow said.

SALT LAKE CITY -- Authorities say a housekeeper was taken to the hospital and a Salt Lake City Marriott hotel was evacuated after a can of bear repellant spray accidentally discharged.
