Romney urges evangelical grads to honor family commitments

LYNCHBURG, Va. — When it came to evangelicals in this year’s primaries, Mitt Romney was most often the rejected suitor — struggling to overcome suspicions about his authenticity as a conservative and his Mormon faith.

On Saturday at the evangelical university founded by the late televangelist Jerry Falwell in Lynchburg, Romney tried to tackle those lingering misgivings as the presumed Republican nominee — by delivering a speech that delved deep into his faith and by urging about 30,000 in the audience at Liberty University to look beyond their differences with his religion.

Mitt Romney, evangelicals seek marriage of convenience

WASHINGTON -- Mitt Romney and the Republican Party's sizable bloc of evangelical voters are about to engage in a marriage of political convenience.

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee's march to the nomination proceeded largely without strong backing from the conservative Christian community.

Romney's evangelical problem on display in South

Mitt Romney's weak appeal so far with white evangelicals will be in the forefront as the GOP presidential primaries move into Southern states where most Republicans are born-again Christians.

Mitt Romney's struggle with white evangelical voters doesn't bode well for him as he moves through the GOP presidential primary, with Mississippi and Alabama just ahead.

Shane Brown, a 43-year-old nondenominational Christian minister from Brandon, Miss., said he and his wife are not fans of Mitt Romney but they're resigned that he will probably win the nomination prior to a rally in Jackson for Republican presidential candidate former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Thursday, March 8, 2012. Romney facing skepticism in Republican South

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mitt Romney faces a tough sell in the Deep South. With Mississippi and Alabama primaries coming up next Tuesday, there's concern that he's too slick, not really a conservative. In a region where the evangelical vote is important, some are skeptical about his Mormon faith.

Tebow draws 20,000 to appearance at Vegas church

LAS VEGAS -- This weekend, the long lines, huge crowds and jersey-clad sports fans in Las Vegas were jockeying for a chance to get into church.

An estimated 20,000 people, including one family that arrived at 4 a.m. Saturday to be the first in line, showed up at Canyon Ridge Christian Church over the weekend to hear Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow share about faith and football.

Huddle-Up offers familial Christian wisdom

OGDEN -- A group of local evangelical Christian youth pastors is offering a gift to the community Jan. 27 and Jan. 28.

They are hoping area parents and youths will take advantage of their 10th annual Huddle-Up Conference, to be held at the Nuevas Alturas branch of Washington Heights Church at 1720 Washington Blvd.

The conference includes a Friday evening seminar from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for parents and a Saturday conference from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for youths ages 12 to 18 and their leaders.

Evangelical pastors divided ahead of 2012 caucuses

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Four years ago, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee won Iowa's Republican presidential caucuses partly by locking up the support of evangelical pastors, the former Baptist minister's brethren and a potent voting bloc within the state's influential Christian conservatives.

Today, Iowa's increasingly political pastors are up for grabs, divided on whom to support from a GOP field that features several candidates who call themselves born-again Christians.
