Pinwheel vigil honors Powell boys in Ogden

OGDEN -- Normally, a serious audience will get annoyed when children laugh and play during a moment of silence.

But on Thursday afternoon, such noise seemed appropriate during an event to honor two young lives that were cut short.

The Pinwheel Vigil for the Powell Boys drew several hundred participants to a ceremony next to a playground in Ogden Municipal Gardens. People of all ages held blue-and-silver pinwheels as a reminder that a child's life should be full of innocence.

Drum players get a bang out of raising cash for Africans in need

OGDEN -- Encouraged by its success in raising money to provide a well for a village in Ghana, a local group now wants to start an orphanage in Liberia.

Kathy Gambles said she loves the way she feels after spending a couple of hours playing African drums. She and a group of friends drummed once a month through last winter and spring at the Eccles Community Art Center and raised enough money to build a well.

Olympic reunion on track

OGDEN -- The GOAL Foundation and friends love to get together for a good community party.

In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the 2002 Winter Olympics, the GOAL Foundation, Ogden City, Weber State University, Snowbasin Resort and the Ogden/Weber Convention and Visitors Bureau will team up to present the 2002 Winter Games Reunion.

Union Pacific celebrating 150 years in Utah, across U.S.

This year, Union Pacific celebrates 150 years since President Abraham Lincoln signed it into existence. The story of the railroad company is tied closely to the modernization of the American West. People and freight began using the railroad to travel across the country 150 years ago and continue to do so to this day.

Germanfest still a 'go' Friday, Saturday

OGDEN -- Though Winterfest is canceled, the Golden Spike Event Center wants to remind everyone that Germanfest will go on as planned this weekend.

WSU speaker to discuss wellness

OGDEN -- Chris Powell, host of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition," will speak Thursday at Weber State University.

Powell, who helped client David Smith lose 401 pounds in 26 months, will speak at noon in the ballroom of the Shepherd Union.

The event is free and open to the public.

"Powell speaks to the average person about wellness and mental health," said Tara Peris, Convocation Lecture Series coordinator.

Seniors in Bountiful to receive lectures on music

BOUNTIFUL -- University of Utah emeritus music professor Lewis Phelps and friends will present four free Thursday lectures on "America's Vernacular Songs" at the Golden Years Senior Activity Center in Bountiful, 726 S. 100 East.

High school plans concert, art show

OGDEN -- Ben Lomond High School, 1080 9th St., will host a student art show from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday to coincide with its school concert. The art show will be in the commons area of the school.

Showcased items will include ceramics, jewelry, fine art and filmmaking.

The free concert begins at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Hayrides starting in Commons Park

LAYTON -- Christmas hayrides through Commons Park are back.

Starting Dec. 2, visitors to the Christmas lights can take a tour of the park in an old-fashioned hayride. The wagons will depart between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. from the Burger Stop parking lot, 323 Gentile St.

'World Famine' to be topic of WSU forum

OGDEN -- A Weber State University Times and Issues Forum on Wednesday will examine "World Famine."

WSU political science professor Nancy Haanstad will speak at the free gathering, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Shepherd Union Lair.

Public welcome at genealogy meeting

OGDEN -- The Northern Utah and Surrounding States Chapter of Utah Genealogical Association will meet at 10 a.m. Saturdayin the Ogden Weber Family History Center, 539 24th St.

Sarah Langsdon, Weber State University Special Collections librarian, will present a talk on the history of Ogden and 25th Street.

Clothing swap to be Tuesday at church

OGDEN -- An all-ages clothing swap will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 705 23rd St. in Ogden.

Anyone can bring their used coats, mittens, gloves and winter clothing to swap. Clothes should be washed and dried beforehand.

To help set up and clean up, arrive at 4:30 p.m.

Self-defense course for women Saturday

LAYTON -- A self-defense course for women is scheduled for Saturday at Gold's Gym in Layton. The course, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, will be from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the gym at Fort Lane and Gentile Street.

The course is $25 per adult -- less $5 for those who bring a friend. The course is $15 for high school and junior high school students.

Presenters and instructors will be Nick and Mike Zeleznik, with MP USA in Ogden.

The course, limited to 70 participants, is designed to teach women how to protect themselves and increase their self-confidence.

Are you ready for Nearly Naked Mile?

OGDEN -- Weber State University will host its second annual Nearly Naked Mile run at 11:11 p.m. on 11/11/11.

That's a little past 11 p.m. Friday.

Participants should bring two cans of food for donation to Weber Cares and gather in the Swenson Gym parking lot at the appointed time. Clothing donations will be collected for the veterans shelter.

Run participants will partially disrobe and run a mile, in temperatures predicted to be in the mid-30s. The run is free and open to all who bring the donations. For more information, visit www.weber.edu/vetaffairs.

Free car washes offered to veterans

LAYTON -- Futura Car Wash at 3011 N. Fairfield Road will provide free car washes to veterans and current military service personnel.

Under the Grace for Vets Free Wash Program, washes will be given rain or shine from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 11 at Futura Car Wash.
