'Clinton Idol,' art demos new to Clinton Heritage Days

CLINTON -- Outdoor art demonstrations and two nights of "idol" competition have been added to the Clinton Heritage Days events schedule.

The community celebration will be Tuesday through July 16, with most of the free festivities being held at Civic Center Park, 1500 W. 2300 North.

This year, the city has added a "Clinton Idol" competition, said Recreation Director LeeAnn Powell.

The first night of the idol contest will feature 16 contestants. The event, which is free to the public, will run from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Civic Center Park near the clock tower, Powell said.

The contest will be held in conjunction with the movie in the park, "Despicable Me," which is also free.

The last night of the idol competition, featuring the finalists, will run from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. July 15.

Plein-air art demonstrations have also been added to this year's schedule, with displays and competitions taking place throughout the five-day Heritage Days.

The idol talent show and art demonstrations were added by the newly established Clinton City Arts Board.

Powell said this year's Heritage Days will not include an outdoor concert featuring a headline act. Last year, a pay-for-ticket concert featuring the country-western crossover band Little Texas was part of Heritage Days.

With the exception of the headliner concert being taken off the schedule, most of the longtime community activities have been brought back by popular demand, she said.

Some traditional events are a fish derby from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Clinton Pond, 3000 W. 2500 North. That day, at 8 p.m., a Clinton Community Band concert will be held at Heritage Park, 100 W. 1300 North.

The Heritage Days carnival also makes its return, with the carnival operating from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, from noon to midnight July 15 and from 10 a.m. to midnight July 16.

Tickets for the carnival are available for half-price at the city offices before Tuesday.

Heritage Days concludes July 16 with a 5K run at 6:30 a.m., a 7:30 a.m. breakfast in Civic Center Park, a 9:30 a.m. parade from Park Plaza to the park and a 10 p.m. fireworks display.
