Free program for kids proves science can be 'so cool'

OGDEN — Baking soda and vinegar aren’t just used for cooking and cleaning — they’re also used for making rockets.

Dozens of children attending Science in the Parks on Thursday afternoon gathered in a big circle while anticipating what might happen when vinegar and baking soda are mixed inside a plastic bottle.

“It causes all this pressure and bubbles to form, and it goes flying in the air,” said 9-year-old Ramirez Hernandez. “That was so cool.”

Check out Weber County attractions for free this summer, thanks to RAMP

OGDEN — Residents have an opportunity to enter numerous Weber County attractions free of charge on Saturdays this summer.

Each Saturday until Aug. 25, residents will get free admission into various attractions in the county, thanks to RAMP Summer Saturdays 2012. The locations include the Boy Scouts of America Ropes Course, The Ice Sheet in Ogden, the North Ogden Pool and the Ogden Nature Center.

Memorial Day weekend events planned

The air show Saturday and Sunday at Hill Air Force Base alone would make for a full Memorial Day weekend; however, several other traditional activities throughout the weekend will be hosted by funeral homes, municipalities and veterans organizations.

Sunny skies on tap for Ogden Marathon

OGDEN -- Mother Nature's wrath came a day early for the Ogden Marathon, but also left early, which means today's 12th version of the race should be fast and cool.

A heavy rainstorm rolled through Northern Utah on Friday, but a forecast of clear, cool conditions will greet the nearly 10,000 participants in today's marathon, half marathon, 5K and Kids K race.

Davis libraries boosting technology, resources for users

FARMINGTON — As library patrons increasingly use electronic media to access information, Davis County Library is working to meet their demands.

Libraries have historically been a major source of knowledge, traditionally in the form of paper books. However, with the increased use of technology, libraries are beginning to expand their resources.

Davis County Library is working to enhance its technology assets by purchasing more e-books, offering online learning games and tools for children and providing access to online car repair manuals, genealogy databases and foreign language courses.

Research continues to show that many adolescents have poor eating habits and decreased physical activity. To help, the Davis County Health Department is offering two free workshop series called BodyWorks to help parents and caregivers teach youngsters how to eat right and exercise, habits that will last a lifetime, says Dr. Jonelle Rowe, senior medical adviser for adolescent women’s health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This Standard-Examiner file photo from 2000 shows youngsters doing leg lift exercises at a Lady Fitness class in Layton.

Want a fitter family? BodyWorks classes might help

CLEARFIELD — The health, weight, eating behaviors, physical activity — or the lack of it — and the body image of Utah’s youths are growing concerns for Davis County Health Department officials.

In response, the department is offering two free BodyWorks program workshops.

ShayLynne Clark, a soon-to-graduate Weber State University student, worked with the WSU Chamber Choir and a student dance teacher to collaborate on a performance called "Coil." The project was part of Clark's research on how groups come up with ideas. She found that groups with a leader who steps back when ideas are flowing come up with more creative ideas than groups with an overbearing leader or a leader who doesn't truly lead. "Coil" will be staged Thursday. (Contributed photo)

WSU student: Groups solve problems more creatively with right leader

OGDEN — ShayLynne Clark plans to graduate from Weber State University in May and head to medical school this fall. And for her four years of hard work, she will take with her three bachelor’s degrees, in anthropology, microbiology and interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis on chemistry.

She’ll also take with her the strong belief, backed by her own research, that people who work together productively as a group can solve problems a lot more creatively than they could in groups with overbearing leaders.

Thousands to descend on Ogden for national undergrad research conference

OGDEN — To get a mental grasp on the number of people coming to Ogden this Thursday through Saturday, think 2002 Olympic curling fans, then add a bunch more people.

That, vaguely speaking, is the size of the group coming to Weber State University for the 26th annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research.
