SALT LAKE CITY -- A judge has halted the firing squad execution of a 50-year-old man convicted of torturing and murdering a Utah college student in 1988.

Arizona executes man for killing, dismembering mom

FLORENCE, Ariz. -- Arizona executed an inmate Wednesday for killing and dismembering his adoptive mother while he was out of prison on furlough for another crime, despite a spate of last-minute appeals over his mental disabilities and how the state has changed and violated its own execution protocol.

Ga. executes Davis; supporters claim injustice

JACKSON, Ga. -- Strapped to a gurney in Georgia's death chamber, Troy Davis lifted his head and declared one last time that he did not kill police officer Mark MacPhail. Just a few feet away behind a glass window, MacPhail's son and brother watched in silence.

Outside the prison, a crowd of more than 500 demonstrators cried, hugged, prayed and held candles. They represented hundreds of thousands of supporters worldwide who took up the anti-death penalty cause as Davis' final days ticked away.

Texas execution halted

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- A black man convicted of a double murder in Texas 16 years ago was at least temporarily spared from lethal injection when the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review his lawyers' claims that race played an improper role in his sentencing.

Ohio executes man for killing fellow jail inmate

LUCASVILLE, Ohio -- A man was executed Tuesday for beating and stomping to death a fellow jail inmate days after the two had argued over what to watch on television.

Clarence Carter, 49, died at 10:25 a.m. at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. He was the second inmate in the nation killed using the surgical sedative pentobarbital as a stand-alone execution drug.
