Pakistani militant leader thumbs nose at US bounty

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan — One of Pakistan’s most notorious extremists taunted the United States during a defiant news conference close to the country’s military headquarters Wednesday, a day after the U.S. slapped a $10 million bounty on him.

France detains 19 suspected Islamist extremists

PARIS -- French police detained 19 people Friday as they launched a crackdown on suspected Islamist extremists in cities around the country, President Nicolas Sarkozy said, promising more raids to come.

Norway mass killer demands medal at court hearing

OSLO, Norway -- The right-wing extremist who has admitted killing 77 people in the worst peacetime massacre that Norway has ever seen told a court Monday that he deserved a medal of honor for the bloodshed and demanded to be set free.

Pakistan army targets officers with extremist ties

ISLAMABAD  -- The Pakistan army is questioning four more officers about suspected links with a banned extremist group that has called for the military to oust the country's government, the army spokesman said Wednesday.

A day earlier, the army said it detained a senior officer working at army headquarters, Brig. Ali Khan, for suspected links with the group, Hizb-ut-Tahrir. The four army majors who are being questioned have not been detained, said army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas.
