Quake in Japan stirs fear in Utah

FARMINGTON -- Since the massive Japanese earthquake hit earlier this month, Ellis Bruch's phone has done a lot of ringing.

Bruch, who works as the Davis County Sheriff's Office emergency services coordinator, said he has been inundated with earthquake-related calls since the quake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11.

Top of Utah students question -- then get to work for science fair

OGDEN -- Ashley Wood, a sixth-grader, suspected men might be more observant of their surroundings than women are.

Sixth-grader Preston Smith grew up hearing about the time his father's house burned down and wondered if some woods are more flammable than others.

And eighth-grader Hunter James wondered if heating or freezing paintballs could enhance his accuracy when shooting his uncles during family paintball battles.

All three students got their answers by doing experiments good enough to qualify for the Ritchey Science & Engineering Fair of Utah.

Utah State Fair goes smoke-free

SALT LAKE CITY -- For the first time in its 155-year history, the Utah State fair is going smoke-free.

Utah State Fair spokeswoman Denise Allen says fair organizers adopted a nonsmoking policy because of second-hand smoke health concerns. She says many public events and venues are adopting similar policies.

Fairgoers invited to duel of musical proportions

Troy Baldwin was singing and playing piano for an appreciative crowd, when he received a request for Garth Brooks' hit "Friends in Low Places." From the first note, members of the audience were singing along. Just before they hit the chorus, a woman jumped up and tipped the pianist $7 to stop.
