Fallen officers

Remember one dead officer, but don't forget the other seven who fell

In 34 years I've never seen my community as overwrought as it is over the shooting death of Ogden Officer Jared Francom in January.

One symptom of how strongly people feel is a movement to name Ogden's amphitheater after Francom. Supporters feel his death is so tragic, his life so worth remembering, that he deserves permanent commemoration.

That's a laudable idea, but what about the other officers who died in the service of their Top of Utah communities?

Fundraiser planned for families of officers hurt, killed in shooting

OGDEN -- The Ogden Golf and Country Club, 4197 S. Washington Blvd., will host a silent auction and boutique from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday to benefit the families of the wounded and fallen officers from the Jan. 4 shooting in Ogden.

Registration available for license plate to honor fallen officers

OGDEN — Sign-up for a new license plate honoring fallen police officers will be available at two different events, one this weekend and one next.

The Department of Motor Vehicles requires 500 applications, with payment, to be collected and turned in together to produce the “Heroes — All Give Some, Some Give All” plates. The plate costs the normal annual registration fee and taxes, plus an extra $35 charity donation.

Firefighters pay tribute to slain officer

OGDEN -- Firefighters are lining both sides of Washington Boulevard, south of 25th Street, to honor Ogden police officer Jared Francom, whose funeral procession will pass along that route.

Two Ogden Fire Department ladder trucks have used their ladders to form an arch over the street, with an American flag hanging from the ladders.

Bob Ramos, 87, a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, was one of the first people along Washington Boulevard. He became emotional talking about the officers.

"Its like a GI going to the front," he said of the police officers' work. "You don't know if you're going to come back."
