A fresh squeeze brings lemonade to market

KAYSVILLE — A refreshing hint of mint permeates the air as Holly Eaton-Jacobsen crushes green mint leaves between her gloved palms. She prepares the mint to place on top of a glass of her freshly squeezed lemonade.

When Eaton-Jacobsen makes lemonade during farmers’ markets, fairs or parties she does it by pressing the lemons and limes in an antique juicer.

More than a year ago, Eaton-Jacobsen stood in line for 45 minutes to purchase a drink at a farmers market.

Panel explores the best ways to market, sell farm products

OGDEN — Fresh is best.

That was the message from a panel of purchasers and promoters of local farm products who spoke at the Utah Farm Bureau Federation’s annual convention, held Thursday at the Eccles Conference Center.

“The connection to food and the connection to Earth is huge,” said Zeke Wray, executive chef with the Talisker Restaurant Collection in Park City. The message he and the other panelists wanted to convey is that they are willing to work around the parameters local farmers and ranchers have for using their products.

Circus boy's mysterious hanging death stuns town

BELLINGHAM, Was. -- For thousands of people who attended the weekly farmers market in Bellingham, Wash., he was the circus boy -- entertaining visitors with juggling, magic tricks and acrobatics delivered with unbelievable aplomb.

But 10-year-old Caleb Kors died suddenly this week while apparently rushing around the house to construct a new circus costume, leaving Bellingham residents grief-stricken over a boy they knew mainly for his four-club juggle toss -- performed with a wisecrack and a rakish smile -- and for his fearless compulsion to perform.

Whatcom County sheriff's officials said Caleb died in an accidental hanging -- though exactly what happened still is unclear. "As far as we know, the young man died in what appears to be an accidental hanging. How he got there, we're not actually sure. There did not appear to be anything suspicious or nefarious," Chief Criminal Deputy Doug Chadwick told the Los Angeles Times.
