JACKSON, Mich. -- A Michigan teen finishing off an Arby's roast beef sandwich chomped down on something tough that tasted like rubber, so he spit it out.

Burger King's menu change was a whopper process

MIAMI -- When Burger King set about to fix its ailing empire, the fast food giant started by scrutinizing everything on the menu -- even the mayonnaise.

A group of Burger King executives and franchisees last year sat through a lengthy presentation complete with charts and graphs on how oils and eggs affect the quality of the spread. A blind taste test of 30 varieties followed. The verdict: They liked the one Burger King was already using.

Most patrons of fast-food shops are regularly asked if they'd like to "value size" or increase the portions of their meal for a few cents more.

Some fast-food patrons in study agreed to downsize meals

Most patrons of fast-food shops are regularly asked if they'd like to "value size" or increase the portions of their meal for a few cents more.

Experts say supersized meals and a "clean plate" culture largely contribute to a national obesity rate among adults greater than 33 percent.

But for a few weeks at a time in 2010, visitors to the Panda Express franchise at Duke University in Durham, N.C., were offered the option of less -- and a surprising number of people took it.

Fast-food eateries to offer more healthful kids' options

LOS ANGELES -- French fries, slathered with ketchup and washed down with a pint of soda, are a favorite part of fast-food lunches and dinners for millions of American youngsters.

But taking a cue from nutritionists, a group of 19 restaurant companies are pledging to offer more healthful menu options for children at a time when concern is growing over the role of fast food in childhood obesity.

Carl's Jr. and Hardee's slim down, cover up, boost sales

LOS ANGELES -- The company that owns the Carl's Jr. and Hardee's fast-food chains is getting more healthy -- and a little less racy.

Stung by more than two years of dipping sales at the Carl's Jr. restaurants, and with its target audience of young men disproportionately suffering from unemployment, CKE Restaurants Inc. is trying to expand its appeal.

It's a change in direction that may be starting to pay off.

Study links potatoes to weight gain

LOS ANGELES -- Public Enemy No. 1 in America's battle of the bulge isn't cupcakes, soda or double bacon cheeseburgers. It's the simple potato, according to Harvard University researchers.

Daily consumption of an extra serving of spuds -- french fried, sliced into crispy chips, mashed with butter and garlic, or simply boiled or baked -- was found to cause more weight gain than downing an additional 12-ounce can of a sugary drink or taking an extra helping of red or processed meats.

Think you're being healthy and saving some calories by ordering the salad or oatmeal?

Don't be so sure, says the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

The group recently tested the nutritional content of some items that fast-food establishments are promoting as healthy. The group found they were far from it.
