BRIGHAM CITY — The Brigham City LDS Temple is headed for Main Street, and locals are excited to see downtown get spruced up.
The temple will be built at 250 S. Main St., a vacant lot directly west of the Brigham City Tabernacle, said Scott Trotter, spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
City Councilman Bruce Christensen said there will probably be some economic benefit to the area, but the biggest improvement is for the spirituality of LDS Church members.
“We’re very excited about the location,” he said. “That, together with some other things we’re doing in Brigham City, will really dress up the downtown area.”
The city has been making an effort to revitalize the downtown, and Christensen said the temple location will boost those efforts.
He said ever since the Oct. 3 announcement at LDS General Conference that the temple would be built in Brigham City, people have been calling the community development office about potential businesses they feel might benefit by being near a temple and a downtown that’s growing again.
Box Elder County Commission Chairman Rich VanDyke said everyone he has heard from is happy about the new temple, and he is also excited from a business standpoint.
His candy company, Idle Isle, is two blocks north of the temple site, and he and other nearby business owners think it will only make the area more attractive to residents.
“That should do our downtown wonders,” VanDyke said.
Both Brigham City mayoral candidates think the chosen site is the best place.
Candidate Reese Jensen said new businesses moving in around the temple and tabernacle will stimulate the economy and that those who travel to the city will want to stop and eat and may need a hotel.
“I’ve talked to several people from other faiths,” said Dennis Fife, mayoral candidate. “They’ve been excited to see a temple here, too. It will beautify our city as well as increase the economy. I think everyone supports it.”
Residents are just as enthusiastic.
“I think it is a wonderful place,” JoAnn Mildenhall said of the temple site. “It is in a central place in the city across from the tabernacle. I think it will bring a great feeling to our town.”
Richard Felt said the temple site is six blocks from where he lives.
“We are ordinance workers in the Ogden temple and we couldn’t be more excited to have a temple in Brigham City. … I have an emotional attachment to the property (site of the Old Central School). I went to school there, my wife taught school there, and all of my children went to school there.”
When completed, the temple will be the LDS Church’s 14th in Utah, and, along with four others announced by the church, will bring the worldwide total to 151.
No design plan or construction time line has been announced.
