Pfc. Joey Foster, 21, of Ogden, was released from the hospital Friday after being shot in the hip during Thursday's attack at Fort Hood.
Foster's wife, Mandy, initially believed he would undergo surgery Friday to clear bullet fragments from his hip, but she said it was determined only pieces of his uniform were in the wound and surgery was unnecessary.
Foster said he'll be OK after the injury.
He was standing about 30 feet from the gunman when the shooting began, he said.
"I've got one thing to say, though," Foster said.
"There was no real heroes. We all were trained, and we did what we did because we're soldiers."
