W. Haven man critical / Officers say driver of pickup in crash may not have seen stop sign at rural intersection

A West Haven man who was critically injured in a crash in unincorporated Weber County on Wednesday morning may have missed a stop sign before his vehicle barreled into a cement truck.

Klint Peterson, 28, was flown by helicopter to Ogden Regional Medical Center. As of Wednesday afternoon, hospital officials said he remained in critical condition.

Peterson was heading north on 3500 West in a Ford Ranger pickup truck and missed a stop sign at the intersection with 1200 South.

His truck collided with a cement truck that was heading west on 1200 South, said Weber Sheriff’s Office Lt. Matthew Bell.

It’s unclear how fast the cement truck was going at the time of the crash, but the speed limit on that stretch of 1200 South is 55 mph.

The driver of the cement truck was identified as Robert Davis, but officials did not have an age for him. Davis was taken to a local hospital with minor cuts.
Bell said the truck belongs to Bob’s Concrete, of Hooper, but the truck was not carrying concrete at the time.

The Weber County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident and may not know the exact cause for a few days, but officials say indications so far are that Peterson failed to see the stop sign at the intersection and drove through it.

Bell said it’s easy to miss the stop sign if you’re not paying attention, but the intersection hasn’t been a much of a problem before. Some who live in the area disagree.

A man who lives near the intersection said he was startled when he heard a loud boom, but thought it was one of the many trains that use the tracks that run parallel to 1200 South.

He said the intersection can be dangerous.

“You can sit there and watch people run that stop sign every day,” he said. “I avoid it. This intersection has always been bad, but it’s bad because people try to beat the stop sign.”

Justin Dee, 20, who also lives close to the crash scene, said he’s seen a number of people rush through the stop sign at 1200 West.

“You have to watch out because the cars are coming fast,” Dee said.

Officials closed off 1200 South near the intersection for most of the afternoon Wednesday.

Traffic was diverted onto side roads while crews lifted and towed the concrete truck and cleared the roadway of a large amount of soft water pellets from Peterson’s truck that spread out over the scene in the collision.

Two injured in crash involving car, cement truck

WEBER COUNTY -- Two men were hurt after a cement truck and passenger vehicle collided in unincorporated Weber County this morning.

The intersection where the wreck occurred, 1200 S. 3500 West, is expected be closed off for several hours more.

Officials say Klint Peterson, 28, of West Haven, was heading north on 3500 West and going through the intersection with 1200 South when his car struck the cement truck.

It is still unclear how fast the cement truck was going at the time of the crash, but the speed limit on that stretch of 1200 South is 55 mph.

Peterson was flown by helicopter to a local hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the cement truck was identified as Robert Davis, but officials do not yet have an age for him. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities say the dump truck belongs to Bob's Concrete of Hooper, but the truck was not carrying cement at the time. The investigation will continue as officials try to determine what caused the crash, but deputies on scene are looking into whether Peterson drove through the stop sign or rushed through it without seeing the cement truck.
