ROY -- Nicole Halverson loves taking pictures and sharing them with family members, but she wanted to do more with her finished product.
"My grandma heard about this class at the library about taking your pictures and making them into movies, and I thought it would be really cool to learn how to do it," she said.
Nicole and her friend, Paige Richardson, decided to attend Teen Tech Week at the Weber County Library's Roy branch on Monday so they could learn how to take digital photos and turn them into movies.
The class, taught by Melissa Zuckerman, assistant branch manager and librarian, is one of five sessions being taught at Weber County Library branches this week.
"We do Teen Tech Week every year at the library. It's a great way to get teenagers involved and acquainted with the library," Zuckerman said. "Teen Tech Week is also a national program through the American Library Association."
During the class, students made team badges and then went on a scavenger hunt through the library. Each time they found an item on the list, they took a picture with a digital camera provided by the library.
"After you take all of your pictures, we'll have you come back and download them onto the computer and we'll make a movie out of them," Zuckerman said. "What's great about this is that you can take your pictures and make a movie for your family or you can learn how to make a report for a class too."
Zuckerman said there are several Web sites that offer software, some with free trials.
"A lot of computers have Windows Movie Maker, and that's what we'll be using tonight, but there are also some really great ones to try, like Camtasia Studio," she said.
Making movies out of photos can include everything from background music to voice-overs.
"You can do so many things with your photos," she said. "You can add transitions, speed up or slow down the viewing time and even alter your voice to make it sound high or low or scary."
Paige Richardson was excited to learn to make movies out of her pictures.
"I take tons of pictures with my phone," she said. "I'm really into picture-taking, and this is awesome."
Tammy Chyr said her aunt is a photographer who does a lot of neat things with her photos.
"I take a lot of pictures too. I just think photography is really cool and I wanted to learn more about making videos," she said.
Hudson Kendall has been making movies from his photos for quite some time.
"I make stop-motion films and it's really fun, but I wanted to come here and learn even more," he said. "It's cool what you can do."
