PARAGONAH -- A 5-year-old girl died in a rollover accident on Interstate 15 early Saturday, troopers say.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers say the girl, her grandparents and her aunt were driving in a 2006 Toyota Tundra around 2:45 a.m.
The northbound truck hit a patch of ice and the female driver lost control, they said.
The truck went off the road and rolled three times before landing upside down about two miles south of Paragonah, at Mile Marker 83.
Troopers say 5-year-old Yazlin Setino, of Ogden, was not in a booster seat. She was wearing a seat belt but wasn't properly strapped in, they said.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Ted Tingey said: "This is pretty much a clear-cut situation. If the child had been in a booster seat, it probably would have made a big difference."
Partially ejected from the truck, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
The three adult occupants suffered minor head, neck and back injuries and were taken to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City.
All three adults were wearing seat belts.
Troopers say the family was traveling home to Ogden from California.
Tingey said he hopes parents and caregivers of children will take this opportunity to consider the safety of their child safety seats in their vehicles.
"Booster seats do work and they do save lives," he said. "That's why we do encourage parents to keep children restrained in a child-restraining device as long as possible."
Tingey said if people ever have questions or concerns about the car seat they are using, such as if it's installed correctly or if there are recalls, they can contact any Utah Highway Patrol office, county health department or Primary Children's Medical Center.
He said firefighters also often are certified to check car seats.
"A lot of times, we can (answer questions) over the phone."
