Bicyclist hit by SUV in Layton; police say driver may face charges

LAYTON -- An 18-year-old male bicyclist was hit by an SUV at 500 North and Main Street on Thursday morning.

The cyclist was riding east on 500 North near Home Depot when he was struck by a light-blue Toyota sport utility vehicle driven by a 31-year-old woman, said Layton Police Lt. Garret Atkin.

The man was crossing the intersection when he was hit, Atkin said.

According to police, the driver of the SUV was heading south on Main Street when her traffic signal turned red.

As she crossed the intersection, a semitrailer began to turn north onto Main Street from 500 North, but stopped after realizing the women was going to continue through the intersection, police said.

The women swerved to miss the semi and ran into the bicyclist, officials said.

Police have not released the name or condition of the victim, who was initially transported to Davis Hospital and Medical Center, then taken by LifeFlight to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

"I wouldn't want to speculate on his condition, but he was LifeFlighted," Atkin said.

Officers are still investigating the accident and interviewing the driver. An arrest has not been made and no charges have been filed.

Because the investigation is still ongoing, Atkin said, the name of the driver is not being released at this time.
