Clinton teen's accident brings community together

CLINTON -- Kris Sanford's world changed on April 25. Sanford was driving with his friend, Jordan Cunningham, when the truck hydroplaned. The truck rolled and Sanford, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the vehicle. He said the truck rolled over his neck. Sanford is now a quadriplegic.
He spent months in the hospital and in Heritage Park Care Center, but returned home on Saturday. The home that he came home to is nothing like he remembers.
Sanford's mom, Ronda, is a waitress at Star Café in Clearfield. She said she mentioned to one of the regulars at the restaurant that her son had been in an accident, and he volunteered to help the family. He asked that he be identified only as Burt.
Burt is a contractor and got to work getting supplies donated. In all, he got over $30,000 worth of supplies donated to the family and volunteered his crew to do the work. The entire house was remodeled, including the kitchen and bathroom and new flooring and paint. New appliances and a central air system were donated.
"I don't do things like this for lots of recognition," said Burt.
More than 100 people volunteered time remodeling the home. He said the countless people who volunteered are greatly appreciated.
Burt has done other charity work as well, and volunteers with Habitat for humanity.
"I think with charity, it's easy to give money, it's tough to give of time," said Burt.
Kris said there will never be enough words to thank those who have helped his family.
"I don't think there's anything better than good people," said Sanford, referring to all the friends and neighbors who have helped with the project.
A wheelchair ramp was recently designed and built by neighbors and Kris' father, David Sanford.
Neighbor Cindy Taylor said Kris is the reason that so many people have jumped in and helped out, because he's the type of person that everyone loves.
Ronda said Kris makes the best of any situation.
"He had dates at the hospital watching movies," she said with a laugh.
Nineteen-year-old Sanford attended college at the College of Eastern Utah. He plans to major in business.
Sanford said his focus is to become as strong as he possibly can.
"I'm trying to get healthy to do things on my own," said Sanford. He has been getting physical therapy at LDS Hospital and Neuroworks, which specializes in neuro rehab. He said his insurance will only pay for therapy at one location. His plan is to try to continue therapy at both locations and to hold fundraisers to help fund the additional therapy.
A yard sale will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at his home, 3133 W. 1925 North, Clinton. A car wash will be held Aug. 22 at Layton Express Wash, 950 W. Hillfield Road, Layton. The family is also planning a barbecue for all the friends and family who have worked on their home.
Those interested in donating or volunteering for future fundraisers can contact Kris at (801) 678-3635.
