BUCKET LIST: Things to do before graduation

Some thought it would never come. But, for the class of 2010, reality sits just months away. Before we know it, we'll finally be the ones putting on the caps and gowns and taking our last steps through the halls of high school.

A majority of people say that their senior year was the best year they ever had at school. I promised myself that I would make this last school year an unforgettable one. In order to do so, I've created a high school bucket list for myself and other seniors. Here's a few things we seniors need to do before this year ends:

5. Join a new club

Due to the need to earn my fine arts credit, I was forced (I mean, strongly encouraged) to take drama this year. At first I thought it was going to be miserable, taking into consideration I've never acted a day in my life. However, I soon decided that it might not be that bad of an experience. I have now made it a personal goal to go out for one of the school plays this year.

Joining a new club or organization at your school will give you a chance to expand your horizons as well as the people you associate with. From D.E.C.A. to drama, it does not matter what you join. Just try something new. Look around and explore some of the clubs and find which one fits you the best. As I've already learned, it brings new opportunities and opens more doors for your future.

4. Try new sports

This time of year, nothing beats going to the games under the Friday-night lights and dressing up in school colors to show pride. But sometimes we tend to forget about the other athletes, the ones who practice just as much and also just as hard. The football and basketball teams pull the largest crowds but they aren't the only ones on the high school playing fields.

Another challenge I set for myself this year is to go to an athletic event that I have not regularly supported over the past two years of high school, for instance, the swim team or the tennis team. Teams like that don't get near as big of popularity points -- but they certainly deserve it. So instead of just cheering for the three-point shooters or touchdown-makers, why not yell for the volleyball spikers or the butterfly-strokers as well?

3. Be spontaneous

If you want to have more fun than you usually do then learn to be spontaneous. Do something out of the blue, whether it is something small or big. You can change your personal style, like the way you wear your hair or what you wear on a day-to-day basis. Or think about getting up early before school and exercising, or eating a new food on the school lunch menu.

If you try something you've never done before, you may end up liking it. Another upside of being spontaneous is it might lead to making new friends. It also gives you more adventures and experiences. Just remember to be safe and smart about how spontaneous you become.

2. Attend dances

The biggest part of high school is making memories that will last a lifetime. It's easy to make memories when you go to the school dances.

Often guys and girls will complain about the costs of some school dances. From the tickets to transportation, everything soon adds up and can get costly. If that's the problem, then learn to conserve. And there are plenty of activities that aren't too expensive and that are still fun but simple. Be creative.

But try to attend as many school dances as possible. Chances are running out and in the end, the money, trouble and time is well worth it. When you surround yourselves by all your friends, loud music, crazy dancing and fun dates, memories don't come much easier.

After all, dances are one of the few nights that girls get to feel like a princess with their hair done and the perfect dress to go with the perfect date. When you look back in a couple of years, you may not remember all the songs you danced to, but you'll remember the dance.

1. Receive diploma

Finally, the most important item of the list. Seniors, we have not worked all these years to not be rewarded for it. Graduation day will come faster than we know it. We'll soon no longer have to go to the classes we dread with the teachers we love.

So enjoy it now while it lasts. Enjoy the unwanted homework, loud assemblies, long lunch lines and everything in between. Work hard and do what you have to, to get that diploma. Put in the extra hours and effort. This is high school, and it comes once.

All in all, it doesn't matter what is on your bucket list, just get involved. Getting involved and surrounding yourself with the friends you love will make lifetime memories that can't be placed in a yearbook.
