Plan now for Abet and Aid Punsters Day, Nov. 8

Halloween is so close it's scary, and Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner. Those are big days for holiday revelers, but for those in the know, every day is a holiday.

Here are a few of the less-well-known reasons to celebrate in the coming month.

Nov. 2, Plan Your Epitaph Day. Don't let someone else have the last word -- write it yourself. Sounds morbid, but writing your own epitaph can be a way to reflect on your life, and motivate you to live up to the words you want written. www.hardiehouse.org/epitaph.

Nov. 3, Sandwich Day. John Montagu, Great Britain's 4th Earl of Sandwich, was born Nov. 3, 1718. He served as an ambassador and navy administrator, but will be forever known for inventing the sandwich so he could eat with one hand while working or gambling with the other. Celebrate with a sandwich -- maybe peanut butter, because November is Peanut Butter Lovers' Month. www.montaguemillennium.com/familyresearch/h_1792_john.htm

Nov. 4, Use Your Common Sense Day. Business adviser Bud Bilanich says he designated Nov. 4 "Use Your Common Sense Day" because it was Will Rogers' birthday. Rogers shared a lot of common sense, including, "Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip" and "Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

Nov. 5, National Men Make Dinner Day. There are rules for this holiday, including: Main meal must include a minimum of four ingredients and require at least one cooking utensil other than a fork. Man agrees not to be within 30 feet of TV remote during cooking process. Man is "allowed" to gloat no more than three times during the meal. Family is encouraged to congratulate man on job well-done. Family dog is not allowed to be secretly fed man's cooking. www.menmakedinnerday.com.

Nov. 7, Fala Day. Celebrated the first Saturday of November each year, Fala Day honors Murray the Outlaw of Falahill, a Scottish terrier who was President Franklin D. Roosevelt's favorite pet. At Roosevelt's Little White House Historic Site in Georgia, there will be parades, grooming exhibits and bagpipe music. Can't go to Georgia for Fala Day? Maybe you can just pamper your pet, and enjoy some time together. http://docs.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/falabio.html.

Nov. 8, Abet and Aid Punsters Day. The act of punning, paronomasia, usually elicits groans. Nov. 8 is a day to laugh (even if you have to fake it) and let folks think they're very punny. You can go back to groaning tomorrow.

Nov. 15, National Bundt Day. Invented in 1950, the fancy round cake pan with a hole in the center was a top seller in a decade. Bake just one Bundt cake, or make two and put them together to make a fall treat that looks like a pumpkin. www.nordicware.com.

Nov. 19, World Toilet Day. There really is a day set aside to think about and appreciate the toilet. According to the World Toilet Organization, there are about 2.5 billion people worldwide without access to proper sanitation, and it's a health risk. There are no Utah (or even U.S.) events listed on the Web site, www.worldtoilet.org, but there are suggestions for getting involved.

Nov. 21, World Hello Day. Established in 1973, in response to conflict between Egypt and Israel, World Hello Day is about spreading peace. All participants are asked to do is greet 10 people with a friendly hello. www.worldhelloday.org/

Nov. 27, Flossing Day. Read and write haikus about flossing, see pictures of cakes decorated with floss, or learn about flossing monkeys at www.flossing.org.
